1. How do I adopt an animal?

Adopting an animal from the El Reno Animal Control Shelter is easier than you think. First, identify the pet you want. Second, contact the Police Department at 405-262-6941 to set-up a visitation/adoption appointment. Third, you'll be asked to sign a small release form. Fourth, take your pet home.

Things to remember:

• Your pet may not necessarily have its shots when you adopt it.
• Spend time interacting with the animal, before adopting it.
• Most of the information about the animal will be given at the time of your visit to the shelter.

2. What do I do if my pet is impounded?

If your pet is impounded, contact the Police Department at 405-262-6941 to make an arrangement to recover your lost pet. There will be a $20 impound fee, plus an additional $10/day boarding fee. If after 72 hours you do not pick-up your pet, it becomes property of the City of El Reno, and all fines and boarding fees will need to be paid before your pet can be returned.

4. What are the El Reno animal shelter fees?

All Adoption and Shelter fees are regulated by El Reno Municipal Ordinance.

El Reno Code and Ordinances: 
Chapter 135, Article II, page 203

1. The fees and charges for impounding and maintaining an animal, which shall be paid upon redemption, shall be as follows:
   1. Horse, mule, donkey, pony, cow or similar large animal: 
      • Impound fee: $30
      • Daily maintenance: $10
   2. Dog, cat, hog, sheep, goat or other animal of similar size: 
      • Impound fee: $20
      • Daily maintenance: $10
   3. Fowl or similar animal: 
      • Impound fee: $20
      • Daily maintenance: $10
   4. Wild or exotic animals: 
      • Impound fee: $100 
      • Daily maintenance: $50
   5. Rabies observation: 
      • Observation fee: $75
      • Daily maintenance: $10
   6. City animal license: $10
   In computing the fee, a fraction of a day during which an animal has been fed shall be deemed a full day.
2. No impounded dog or cat shall be released to the owner until all requirements of this chapter have been met and the required license has been purchased.
3. The Police Department shall not issue a license for any dog until the Chief of Police has been furnished with a certificate of a veterinarian or other person legally authorized to immunize dogs, showing that the dog has been immunized against rabies during the calendar year, or within six months prior to the impounding of the dog, if immunized in a previous year; provided, however, that the Chief of Police may authorize the release of an impounded dog if the owner or his agent has deposited a cash bond in the sum of $20, conditioned upon the agreement by the owner or his agent that such dog will be immunized against rabies within 30 days from the date of posting said bond. If the owner or his agent furnishes the Chief of Police with certificate of a veterinarian or other person legally authorized to immunize dogs that the dog has been immunized against rabies within the time aforesaid, the City Clerk shall refund the cash bond to the owner or his agent, less any fees for impounding and keeping which may be due to the City. If the owner or his agent does not furnish the Chief of Police with such certificate within the thirty-day period, then the bond shall be forfeited to the City of El Reno. The forfeiture of the bond shall not relieve the owner of such dog of the obligation of obtaining a license as herein provided.
4. In the case of an adoption of a dog or cat from the pound, the above immunization requirements shall apply. In addition, a $40 cash bond shall be posted conditioned upon the agreement by the owner or his agent that such animal will be sterilized within 30 days of adoption. If the owner or his agent furnishes the Chief of Police with a statement of a veterinarian that the dog or cat has been sterilized, the City Clerk shall refund the cash bond to the owner or his agent. If the owner or agent does not furnish the Chief of Police with such statement within the thirty-day period, the bond shall be forfeited to the City of El Reno.
